Image Composition: 8 Essential Tips

Everyone, at some point in our lives, has heard about art history and image composition terms like the golden ratio, the rule of thirds, or symmetry. But did you know that today, all these methods are incredibly useful in product promotion? Yes, mastering image composition is key to capturing your target audience’s attention and making them remember your product. That’s why today we’re giving you 8 essential tips to improve image composition in photographs, drawings, paintings, and of course, product promotion.

What is image composition?

We define image composition as the way we arrange the elements within an image, the perspective from which they are presented, the angle… all to tell the story we have in mind in an engaging and impactful way for the viewer. Using compositional elements and techniques strategically helps you guide the viewer’s gaze exactly where you want it to convey your intended message.

Our top tips for mastering image composition

Here, we share some of the most useful and widely used compositional techniques throughout art and photography history, so your creations can be more original and express your unique point of view.

The rule of thirds: the quintessential image composition technique

One of the most well-known image composition rules is the rule of thirds. It involves dividing your image into three vertical sections and three horizontal sections, creating a grid. To make the composition impactful, place the main element along one of the lines or, even better, at one of the intersections. This not only achieves balanced image composition, but also directs the viewer’s attention to the points of interest.

Balance

Balance in image composition is closely related to the rule of thirds. If you place the main element at one of the intersections but ignore the rest of the space, one side of the image will feel heavy and the final composition will be unbalanced. Therefore, place some weight (another element) on the opposite side to make the composition stronger and more stable.

Leading lines

In image composition, guiding the viewer’s gaze to where you want it is key. We use leading lines to help the viewer follow a path through the image until they reach the main element. Unlike the rule of thirds, these lines are created by other elements in the composition.

Curves

Curves differ from other lines by their ability to convey movement. Many elements allow us to use curves in image composition, like rivers, roads, or pathways. Including them helps guide the gaze and create interest in the elements.

Color, an essential element in image composition

To create a truly powerful composition, we cannot forget color. We’ve previously discussed the psychology behind colors and their role in product promotion, but color is also a key element in image composition. Choose between warm and cool colors to determine the emotional effect your composition will have on the viewer.

Rule of threes

There’s something mystical about the number three that creates a magical aura in image composition, attracting the viewer’s eye and interest. Avoid even numbers and work with three elements instead of two or four to create triangles and add depth to the image.

Negative space

Another method to highlight the main element in image composition is surrounding it with negative space, such as a uniform background like a wall or the sky. Following this principle, we remove distracting elements and focus attention entirely on the main point of interest.

Natural framing

A way to elevate your image composition is to use natural elements that guide the viewer’s gaze toward the focal point. Think of branches, doors, windows, arches… any element that “frames” your main element to make it stand out above everything else. These natural frames provide context to your composition, showing the perspective from which the main element is viewed.
