Lluís Domènech i Montaner: One of the Fathers of Catalan Modernism

Lluís Domènech i Montaner was a Spanish architect and one of the founding figures of Catalan Modernism. Many of his works have been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. After exploring the careers of major Spanish architects such as Antoni Gaudí and Carme Pinós, at Behind Pictures we now take a closer look at the work of Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

Who was Lluís Domènech i Montaner?

Lluís Domènech i Montaner was born in Barcelona and studied both physical-mathematical sciences and architecture—the latter being his true passion from a young age. After graduating, he traveled across Europe to explore the emerging architectural trends shaping the turn of the century. Upon returning, Domènech i Montaner became a professor at the Barcelona School of Architecture, where he had a strong influence on Catalan architecture. At the same time, he began designing buildings rich in ornamentation, with notable Hispano-Arab influences. Over time, his buildings became lighter, replacing heavier materials with more decorative elements such as ceramics, mosaics, stained glass, and iron.

Relationship with Catalan Modernism

Domènech i Montaner’s connection to Catalan Modernism was absolute. He was one of the pioneers of this architectural movement that gained momentum in Catalonia. Inspired by other European countries, he brought these ideas to Barcelona and passed them on to his students—the future architects of Catalonia and modernist art. He introduced curved forms, Asian influences, and promoted a lighter, more refined architectural language.

Main works of Lluís Domènech i Montaner

Lluís Domènech i Montaner left a remarkable legacy across Barcelona. Many of his buildings have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites and are now iconic elements of the city’s identity. Here are some of his most emblematic works:

Palau de la Música Catalana (1905–1908)

The Palau de la Música Catalana is a concert hall located in Barcelona’s Sant Pere district. It is considered one of the most advanced modernist buildings of its time due to its technological innovation. It features large glass walls and richly detailed ornamentation that integrates multiple artistic disciplines, including metalwork, ceramics, and sculpture. Its decoration is an allegory of nature and music. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

Hospital de Sant Pau Modernist Complex (1905–1930)

The Hospital de Sant Pau represents a new model of healthcare architecture, where hygiene, natural light, ventilation, and open spaces played a key role in patient recovery. It consists of a unique complex of modernist buildings and pavilions, connected by underground passages. Construction took place between 1905 and 1930, initially led by Domènech i Montaner and later completed by his son, Pere Domènech i Roura. This project occupies a large section of Barcelona’s Eixample district and is one of the most important examples of Spanish Modernism. It was also designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

Casa Lleó Morera (1902)

Casa Lleó Morera, located on Passeig de Gràcia, was a renovation commissioned by Francesca Morera. Domènech i Montaner transformed the building with new balconies, tribunes, and a redesigned façade. The façade features sculptures, symbolic references to the family name, and allegories of modern inventions. He collaborated with several artists, including Eusebi Arnau.

Casa Fuster (1908)

Casa Fuster, located at the end of Passeig de Gràcia, has been a luxury hotel since 2004. Domènech i Montaner’s style is evident in its red stone columns, floral ornamentation, white marble, and French-style mansard roofs.
