Product Design: Understanding Apple’s Success

Have you ever had a revolutionary product idea, only to realize it had already been invented? To succeed in the world of product design, you need to unleash your creativity and create something with the sole purpose of changing the status quo. Clearly, this is no easy task, and one doesn’t become a revolutionary overnight… What better example than Apple? The success of their products is extraordinary, and at Behind Pictures, we want to show you the revolution this company brought to millions of people.

What does product design consist of?

To understand how to innovate in this field, you first need to grasp the purpose of product design. There are many ways to define it, but ultimately, product design is the creation process an idea must go through to be launched into the market, achieving the best possible outcome for the end consumer. Product design should focus on the target audience and address a specific need. Making a product stand out in its early days is challenging, but with a strong product design team, you can achieve the impossible. This is exactly what happened at Apple; here’s the story.

What do you know about Apple?

Do you know the story of Apple? What everyone knows, right? It’s one of today’s largest technology companies, as well as one of the most profitable of all time. What you may not know is that it also faced challenging moments… Let’s go back to January 1976, when electronics enthusiast Steven Wozniak and the brilliant Steve Jobs founded the company. Several computers would be released over the following years; some became major successes, others were forgotten. The logo we all recognize also emerged during this period. Dark times approached, and the company was on the brink of bankruptcy in 1997 after a series of leadership changes. Curiously, it was at this time that the famous Lisa and Macintosh models, along with their product design, first saw the light of day. Eventually, Jobs took control, Apple returned to the spotlight, leading with genuine innovations that, among other things, thanks to its iconic product design, shaped everything we know today: iMac in 1999, iPod in 2001, eMac in 2002, and MacBook in 2006. The rest is history.

Think different: Apple’s most famous philosophy, reflected in its product design

More minds are needed for a genius to reach their full potential, and under this philosophy, each employee works to create something different and spectacular. Steve Jobs was never alone. Among all his successes, one stands out: it forever changed the understanding of product design. He discovered the hidden talent in plain sight; have you ever heard the name “Jony Ive”?

Who is Jony Ive?

“While some see them as crazy, we see them as geniuses. The people crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do…” This principle sparked the brand’s fame and introduced one of the most recognized figures in product design, Jonathan Ive. Ive led the product design for many of the company’s biggest successes and ensured that each one embodied the “think different” philosophy that brought them fame. But what made this concept so impactful?

Apple minimalism in product design

Thanks to Steve Jobs, limitations disappeared and Jony Ive could finally innovate. What always caught his attention in product design was minimalism, first applied to a device that changed the way we listen to music: the iPod. Rectangular, with rounded edges; a hallmark of Apple’s product design that soon became a necessity. Simple and elegant. What followed? Pure history: iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro/Air, Apple Watch…
