What Do You Know About Antoni Gaudí?

Do you know how many figures have shaped the history of architecture? Hundreds of people have contributed to this discipline, and today at Behind Pictures we want to talk about a true genius of architecture: Antoni Gaudí! Like Le Corbusier or Miguel Milá, he became a role model for future generations, as his work reflects his extraordinary creativity and deep passion for architecture. Antoni Gaudí marked a turning point in Catalan Modernism, and today we’ll show you how he achieved it.

Who was Antoni Gaudí?

His career can be summed up as a constant pursuit of artistic perfection, shaping spaces with a rare level of skill and sensitivity. Antoni Gaudí i Cornet, born on June 25, 1982, was an architect who drove the new ideals that would define Modernism at the time, becoming one of its leading figures as he created increasingly groundbreaking works.

Antoni Gaudí and Catalan Modernism

Antoni Gaudí always sought to capture the essence of nature in his designs, following patterns that challenged the architectural norms of the early 20th century. These ideas earned him recognition as a genius from his early years, during which he collaborated with some of his professors. His fresh perspective and unmatched talent in spatial design, along with his innovative use of materials and techniques, set him apart among Catalan Modernist architects.

Key features of Modernism

You may remember that not long ago we talked about Modernism and its main characteristics. As we explained, the Modernist movement rejected monotony and mass production brought about by the Industrial Revolution, and instead emphasized decoration and lightness as essential elements. Antoni Gaudí was deeply inspired by nature and used it as a guiding principle in all his projects. Natural motifs are one of the defining features of this style.

Our favorite works by Antoni Gaudí

Antoni Gaudí was undoubtedly one of the leading figures of Catalan Modernism, as reflected in a career full of achievements, including seven works listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These are some of our favorite works by Antoni Gaudí.

Park Güell

Park Güell was conceived at the beginning of the 20th century as a garden city project. It was one of the many commissions Eusebi Güell entrusted to Antoni Gaudí. Although the full project was never completed, Gaudí eventually bought a house there and lived in it until his death.

Palau Güell

This was one of Eusebi Güell’s most important commissions and a key opportunity that helped establish Antoni Gaudí as a major figure in Modernism. The design revolves around functionality, incorporating the defining features of the movement.

Casa Vicens

This project marked Antoni Gaudí’s first clear demonstration of his mastery of Modernist techniques. Its exquisite design blends ornamentation and construction so seamlessly that one cannot be understood without the other.

Casa Milà (La Pedrera)

One of Gaudí’s masterpieces is Casa Milà, commissioned by Pere Milà and Roser Segimon. Located in the center of Barcelona, its iconic undulating façade—once the subject of criticism—has become a symbol of the city and one of the greatest examples of Catalan Modernism.

Casa Batlló

Casa Batlló is not only a key building within Catalan Modernism but also a true icon of the movement that transformed architecture worldwide. Admired by architects throughout history, this renovation led by Antoni Gaudí combines exceptional functionality with striking artistic expression.

Nativity Façade of the Sagrada Família

This is one of Antoni Gaudí’s most important works. Construction of the Nativity Façade of the Sagrada Família began in 1893 and features the temple’s first sculptural representation.

Crypt of Colònia Güell

The Güell family developed a strong relationship with Antoni Gaudí, and their support helped him establish himself as one of the country’s leading architects. The Crypt of Colònia Güell was the result of extensive research and experimentation, and it was later included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2005.
